CHP provides housing opportunities and related services to individuals of low-wealth in the U.S. Our services include the development, construction, preservation, weatherization, and/or management of healthy and sustainable affordable housing stock. CHP also delivers homeownership and resident services that promote financial literacy and stability. In addition, we offer education and training in energy and conservation practices, weatherization, and green building. CHP works each year with thousands of individuals and families, building professionals, homeowners, and other people in need of assistance.
We are registered with the IRS as a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation and are headquartered in Christiansburg, Virginia. CHP has additional offices in central and northern Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina, and Florida. CHP employs almost 400 people and is governed by a volunteer board of directors composed of experts in areas such as real estate development, finance, sustainable building, and property management.
Our three main business segments are organized to deliver services efficiently and collaboratively to better serve our mission of helping people of limited resources with their housing needs.
Real Estate Development
CHP’s Real Estate Development business segment creates community-sensitive new energy-efficient residential communities and facilities, as well as renovates aging multi-family housing stock. Our development capacity and efficiency are enhanced by a vertically integrated staff, experienced in community-building practices and environmentally responsible products and techniques. Our services are offered as stand-alone, fee-for-service contracts with an attention to quality, timeliness, and budget.
CHP’s Energy Solutions business segment promotes healthier, safer, more energy efficient built environments by providing energy audits, inspections, energy performance upgrades, and building science education.
CHP’s Housing Services business segment provides economical homes to own or rent and related supportive services designed to encourage personal and community success.
In 2015, CHP was ranked as one of the nation’s Top 50 Affordable Housing Developers by Affordable Housing Finance magazine and listed by the National Affordable Housing Management Association (NAHMA) as one of the 101 largest affordable multifamily property managers in the U.S.
We are a chartered member of NEIGHBORWORKS AMERICA, and a member of both the Housing Partnership Network and the Federation of Appalachian Housing Enterprises (FAHE).
Since 1975, CHP has invested $440,000,000 in communities through real estate development; grown its multi-family housing inventory to almost 6,000 units; weatherized approximately 34,000 homes; and assisted over 360,500 individuals with their housing, financial, and social needs.
