Read, Connect, Grow: Stories that Bring Us Together
Help Us Support Summer Literacy Through the CHP Reads! Summer Reading Program
CHP Reads! is back for its seventh year — and we’re inviting you to come alongside us in supporting summer reading and learning for kids living in CHP communities.
Launched in 2019, CHP Reads! is a summer reading initiative designed to help young residents stay engaged, keep learning, and build a love of reading while school is out. Through book fairs, Little Free Libraries, and community reading events, the program has provided more than 18,000 books to children and families at CHP apartment communities across Virginia and Maryland.
This year’s theme — “Read, Connect, Grow: Stories that Bring Us Together” — celebrates the power of books to spark connection, creativity, and growth across generations.

Help us build and install a Little Free Library for $750.
Little Free Library is a non-profit organization that encourages local communities to share books through public book exchanges. In most cases, these exchanges involve a small public bookcase placed in a neighborhood.
Since its start in 2019, CHP Reads! has become so much more than just a summer reading program. It’s a way for residents of all ages to connect, learn, and grow together.
Each summer, kids living in CHP communities receive free books they can read, enjoy, and keep — helping them stay engaged and build confidence as readers. Along the way, the program has expanded to include intergenerational activities that bring together grandparents, parents, and children to share stories and strengthen family connections.
Over the past six years, CHP Reads! has reached thousands of residents, distributing more than 18,000 books and hosting over 100 literacy-focused events across 40 communities.
This summer, CHP Reads! will kick off during National NeighborWorks Week (June 7–14, 2025), continuing our mission to create meaningful moments through books — and you can help make it happen.

Another Year of Learning and Connection
“This year, as our theme suggests, we are creating opportunities for participants to share their favorite books and stories with one another,” said Stacy Taylor, Resident Services Programs Developer at CHP. “When children have access to books and positive reading experiences with those around them, their confidence and joy in reading grow, leading to a lifelong love of learning. CHP Reads is all about encouraging those experiences and helping to remove barriers that stand in the way within our communities.”
CHP not only offers desirable, economical homes to own or rent, but also encourages personal and community success through supportive services and programming. CHP Housing Services includes Asset Management, Homeownership, Property Management, and Resident Services.
