Getting to know the children where he worked was Darrin Savino’s favorite part about his job as a part-time security officer at three apartment communities in Virginia Beach. Savino, a Master Police Officer with the Virginia Beach Police Department for 27 years, worked for CHP for 23 of those years until his retirement last month.
“I feel so fortunate to have seen three generations grow up at Friendship Village, Lynnhaven Landing, and Seahaven Apartments,” remarked Savino. “I still keep in touch with some that have grown up and are adults now.”
Savino worked so closely with the tenants that he frequently brought his son out to the rental communities to play with the resident children, and he even delivered a baby at Friendship Village 20 years ago. “That was really amazing! I didn’t expect that to happen, but everything turned out well in the end,” said Savino.
Senior Regional Property Manger Nona Hipp said Savino was “such a pleasure to work with…everybody loved working with him. He played a big part in the success of our neighborhoods and keeping them crime-free.”
The now-retired Savino now plans to stay home with his 11-year-old son and substitute teach in the Virginia Beach school system.
