As the seasons change and temperatures drop, it is essential to ensure that our homes are ready to face the challenges of winter. Community Housing Partners (CHP), which has provided weatherization services to households in Virginia since 1976, helps qualifying households reduce energy costs and keep their homes warm.

For those who qualify based on income or age, CHP provides weatherization services at no cost. The goal of weatherization is to increase energy efficiency, lower utility bills, and create comfortable living conditions. This involves various measures, from simple changes like switching to energy-efficient LED light bulbs to more complex tasks such as insulating your home’s walls, sealing windows and doors, and even replacing broken windows. Much of this work may go unnoticed, but it has a significant impact on energy consumption and comfort.

The weatherization process begins with an energy audit, which is the first step in understanding your home’s energy efficiency. Meghan McMillen, Director of Weatherization Programs and Services at CHP Energy Solutions, emphasizes the importance of this step, stating, “The energy audit is like a roadmap for us. It helps us understand where the issues are, so we can focus our efforts on the most critical areas to improve.”

Following the energy audit, CHP’s weatherization technicians make necessary repairs and improvements to the home.  Alex Carrion, Weatherization Technician at CHP Energy Solutions, reflects on his work, sharing, “The ultimate goal is to make the home as energy efficient as possible. Not many people can afford to do it on their own, and that’s where we come in.”

CHP serves thousands of families annually by providing weatherization and energy efficiency services and is the largest weatherization provider in Virginia. As winter approaches, reach out to CHP to see how they can help you weatherize your home and stay warm.  Virginia residents can view a map of weatherization service areas in Virginia and contact CHP Energy Solutions to see if they qualify by emailing chpenergysolutions@chpc2.org or calling 540-381-9446 and dialing zero to speak to an operator.

Weatherization is crucial to maintaining a comfortable and cost-effective home. If you don’t qualify for CHP services, don’t forget to check with your local utility provider to see if they offer energy audits.
