Fifty-four-year-old Timothy Greenhow has lived at the Woods at Yorktown Apartments in Yorktown, Va. for 10 years and now regularly volunteers at its on-site community center.
As a volunteer, Greenhow has primarily focused his time and energy helping with the delivery of the many food programs that are offered by on-site resident services staff and local partners at the Woods at Yorktown, including the rental community’s Neighbor to Neighbor program, USDA Mobile Food Pantry, Kids Eat Free Summer Program, and more. More than 100 families are served by the feeding programs, which address food insecurity among the residents.
According to CHP Resident Services Coordinator Mignon Middleton, “Mr. Greenhow takes initiative on a daily basis to identify any needs that he observes throughout the community and to offer solutions and his assistance to improve the situation. Residents know that they can depend on Mr. Greenhow to assist them during food distributions and other community events when a helping hand is needed.” Middleton added that Greenhow’s services have not only benefited hundreds of residents, but have also given him an opportunity to engage more in the community and take on leadership roles in their community.
“Since I’m retired, volunteering at the center helps me to occupy my time and to give back. I am able to learn so much just by spending time at the center. I love working with the staff there and enjoy talking to them. I don’t know what I would do if I didn’t have the center to come over to every day,” said Greenhow.
