Centrally located just minutes off of I-95, 20 minutes from Washington, D.C., and tucked away within the beautifully landscaped community of Spring Hill in Lorton, Virginia, Lindsay Hill is the perfect place to call home. CHP’s Stephanie Best serves as Senior Property Manager.
Please introduce yourself and share a bit about your background in property management.
My name is Stephanie, and I am the Senior Property Manager for Lindsay Hill Senior Apartments and Townsquare at Dumfries. I have several years of experience in property management, with much of my background focused on affordable housing and LIHTC communities. In my current role, I oversee the day-to-day operations of both communities, including resident relations, compliance, maintenance coordination, and ensuring our properties remain welcoming places our residents are proud to call home.
How long have you been managing this property, and what do you enjoy most about managing it?
I have been managing Lindsay Hill since October 2022. Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to really get to know our residents and build genuine relationships with them. That is probably what I enjoy most about managing a senior community. Our residents aren’t just apartment numbers or names on a ledger; I know their personalities, their stories, and often their families. Sometimes they stop by because they need assistance, and other times they simply want to chat or share something about their day. I really value that sense of connection and being part of a community where those relationships matter.
What makes this property distinctive within the community?
One of the most unique things about Lindsay Hill is its history. Originally built in 1920 as part of the former Lorton Correctional Complex, the property has since been thoughtfully redeveloped and converted into residential housing. Because of the historic architecture and the way the original building was transformed, no two apartments at Lindsay Hill are exactly alike. Each home has its own character, with different layouts and architectural details. I think that combination of history and individuality is what makes Lindsay Hill so special; you aren’t just living in another apartment community; you’re living in a piece of local history.
If the property had a personality, how would you describe it in a few words?
Charming, welcoming, and unique.
What feature or aspect of the property do residents appreciate most?
Our residents really appreciate the combination of privacy, security, and community that Lindsay Hill offers. The property is located within a gated community, and residents also have access to HOA amenities and community programs, giving them opportunities to stay active and connected. They get the benefit of living in a smaller senior community while still having access to the amenities and activities of the larger neighborhood. I think they also enjoy the individuality of their apartments. Because of the property’s historic conversion, each home is a little different and has its own character.
Can you share a moment or piece of feedback that reflects a positive resident experience?
Some of the most meaningful feedback isn’t necessarily formal; it comes through everyday interactions. Having residents stop by just to say hello, share a story, or thank our team after we’ve helped resolve an issue is incredibly rewarding. Those moments tell me that we’ve created an environment where residents feel comfortable coming to us and know that they will be listened to and treated with care.
What’s a tip or creative solution you’ve found helpful for supporting residents?
Communication and patience make a tremendous difference. I try to remember that something that may feel routine from a management perspective can be very important or stressful to the resident experiencing it. Taking an extra few minutes to explain a process, provide an update, or simply listen can completely change someone’s experience. Even when we can’t provide the answer a resident is hoping for, we can make sure they understand what is happening and know that their concern has been heard.
What do you appreciate most about the surrounding community or neighborhood?
One of my favorite things about the surrounding neighborhood is having Liberty Market within walking distance of our residents. Like Lindsay Hill, Liberty Market is part of the original Lorton Correctional Complex that has been thoughtfully redeveloped and given new life. Today, it is home to a Lidl grocery store, several restaurants, a rock-climbing facility, dog training, a nail salon, and other businesses and services. There is also still commercial space being developed, so it has been exciting to watch the area continue to grow and see what will open next. I especially appreciate that our residents have convenient access to shopping, dining, and activities right within their own neighborhood while still being surrounded by so much of the area’s history.
From your perspective, what makes this property a great place to call home?
I think Lindsay Hill offers our residents a really special combination of history, convenience, and community. They get to live in a beautiful historic property where every apartment has its own character, while also enjoying the comfort of a gated community and access to HOA amenities and programs. With Liberty Market within walking distance, residents have shopping, dining, and activities practically right outside their door. What really makes Lindsay Hill a great place to call home, though, is the sense of community. It is a smaller senior property where residents and staff have the opportunity to truly get to know one another. There is something special about living in a place with more than a century of history while still being part of a neighborhood that continues to grow and evolve around you.
