Community Housing Partners (CHP), which provides affordable and sustainable housing across the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic, has partnered with Baseline Solar Solutions, a Virginia-based residential and commercial solar company, to outfit its corporate headquarters with solar panels. The solar project helps reduce CHP’s electrical consumption and is the latest example of the organization’s commitment to sustainability in its communities and business practices.

Baseline Solar at Corporate HeadquartersBaseline Solar recently completed the installation of the 87-panel array at CHP’s corporate headquarters in Christiansburg, Virginia. The panels are estimated to reduce the building’s electrical usage by 24%, or about $1,600 in annual savings.

“Reducing energy consumption has always been a primary focus for us,” said Janaka Casper, Chief Executive Officer at CHP. “We are always looking for ways to be more sustainable and shrink our environmental footprint and want others to do the same.”

Several properties in CHP’s Virginia portfolio already have solar panels, including Greenstone on 5th Apartments in Charlottesville, Grissom Lane Apartments in Blacksburg, Holly Court Apartments in Kilmarnock, and Lindsay Hill Senior Apartments in Lorton. CHP’s leadership, with the help of a dedicated team of staff from different departments, is working toward making the company net zero by 2050. The installation of the solar panels at CHP’s corporate office is part of reaching that goal.

“Community Housing Partners continues to be a shining example of sustainability and green business here in the New River Valley,” said Jonathan Roberts, Marketing Manager at Baseline Solar. “Net metered solar is just the next step in CHP’s efforts to reduce its impact and create affordable housing across the region.”

CHP has a long history of championing sustainability and has offered weatherization services since the 1970s and energy efficiency training for building professionals since the 1990s. In 2016, CHP received the first Viridiant Net-Zero certification in the state for the completion of Grissom Lane Apartments in Blacksburg, and in 2018, it was named the New River Valley Green Company of the Year by the Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce.
