CHP Energy Solutions, AHD Inc, Residential One Management, and Franklin Capital Group welcomed area partners to Weatherization Day at Mosby Heights in Harrisonburg, Virginia, on April 26. The Energy Solutions crew has been providing weatherization improvements to all 112 townhomes in this affordable housing community over the last month and invited the community to learn more about the work being done.

Leaders from local government, housing, environmental, and social services organizations, along with area property owners and managers were in attendance. Joseph Resende, President of Franklin Capital Group and owner of Mosby Heights, provided remarks along with CHP Energy Solutions’ Director of Weatherization, Meghan McMillan, City of Harrisonburg Councilwoman Monica Robinson, and General Manager of Harrisonburg Electric Commission (HEC) Brian O’Dell.

CHP's Michael Whitley at Mosby Heights

CHP’s Michael Whitley discusses the importance of energy audits with participants in the Mosby Heights event.

Robinson, who shared her own gratitude in participating in CHP Energy Solutions’ single-family program, highlighted the need among area residents for this work. “I look at it as a way for a city to help a population that has been dragged in various ways,” she shared. “We are looking for help and this is one of those helpmates.”

After some brief snacks and a chance to connect, attendees visited three stations around the property. In a residents home, Weatherization Crew Lead Derek Underwood described the benefits of weatherization and showed attendees some of the measures being installed, including weather stripping, LED light bulbs, faucet aerators, and insulation. At another unit, Energy Auditor Michael Whitley demonstrated a blower door test and highlighted the critical role an energy audit plays in determining what improvements can be made to homes. Finally, Tyler Cox, a Weatherization Field Supervisor, gave attendees a look inside a weatherization box truck, demonstrating the tools needed to complete work across CHP’s weatherization territory. The CHP Energy Solutions team is about halfway through weatherization of all 112 townhomes at Mosby Heights. As work continues, the team is also pursuing the replacement of 74 aging and inefficient heat pumps. Subject to DHDC approval and through funding from the Weatherization Deferral Repair (WDR) Program, Mosby Heights residents can benefit from 74 high efficiency heat pumps by the end of the year.

“We had a truly great experience with CHP Energy Solutions and its Multifamily Weatherization Program at Mosby Heights,” said Holly D’Avanzo, Vice President of the Franklin Capital Group, which owns Mosby Heights. “The energy improvements will both contribute to the quality of life for our residents in the form of comfort and reduced utility costs and benefit the overall community with environmental efficiencies. As an affordable housing community, Mosby Heights would not be able to realize those benefits without this program and CHP’s efforts.”
