Community Housing Partners is renovating Cedar Crest Apartments, an affordable townhome community that offers spacious living areas with private yards in Blacksburg, Virginia. All 78 apartments (including six accessible units) are scheduled to be completed by October 2021. Virginia Housing provided funding for this $1.6 million renovation effort.

What To Expect

What to Expect from Your Renovations

  • Your kitchen renovation will include new cabinets with additional storage, countertops, new sinks, new faucets, new appliances (in most cases), new garbage disposals, and a custom cabinet shelf with microwave.
  • Your bathroom renovation will include a new vanity, top, faucet, toilet, bath fan, and hardware.
  • All apartments will receive new LED lighting throughout.
  • New high efficiency water heaters (in most cases)
  • New front doors
  • New back doors (in some cases)
  • On the outside you can expect a new sealed driveway, substantial renovation to the deck, and we will be pressure washing the exterior of the building.

What to Expect When the Work Starts

  • A construction crew will need to enter your home over several days to complete renovations. Construction will take place between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.
  • While workers are in your apartment you can remain in the apartment, but you will not be able to use your kitchen or bathroom until workers leave for the day.
  • You will also not have access to water during this time.
  • CHP will have a hospitality room available for residents who want to leave their apartments during construction with advance notice.
  • You will receive a notice from Property Management letting you know three days before renovations begin on your apartment.

What We Need from You

  • The day before work starts on your apartment, you will need to pack any items in your kitchen, including clearing all cabinets, countertops, and any obstructions that will prevent contractor from working. You will also need to pack any items in your bathrooms, including clearing vanities, vanity tops, and any obstructions that will prevent the contractor from working. Please also remove any items being stored on and around the water heater.
  • Ensure there is a clear path to all light fixtures.
  • Have any pets secured before the construction crew arrives.
  • For days that workers will be working in your apartment, please keep the driveway open and clear to allow for materials to be delivered to your apartment. You may park your car on the street.
  • Make sure items of value and breakables are properly secured.
  • Construction always has unexpected challenges. We appreciate your patience and understanding during this process.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where and when will renovations begin?
Renovations are scheduled to begin May 17, 2021. We will be starting on Essex Court. You will receive a notice from property management three days prior to work starting on your apartment.

When will the workers be in my apartment?
Work will be conducted Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Each apartment is expected to take 3-5 days to complete. Please make sure all obstructions are removed so workers will have access.

When will I need to be packed up?
At least one day prior to your start date. You will receive a notice from property management three days prior to work starting on your unit.

Will I have access to my kitchen?
You will not have access to your kitchen between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. while work is being done in your apartment. Some kitchens may not be fully functioning for approximately 48 hours.

Will I have access to my bathroom?
You will not have access to your bathroom(s) between the hours of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. while work is being completed in your apartment. You will have access to one bathroom after 5 p.m. each day until work is completed on your apartment.

What is CHP’s COVID protocols while in my home?
All workers will be required to strictly adhere to CHP’s COVID protocols (PDF).

Where can I go while work is being done if I choose to?
If you do not have somewhere to go, we will have a hospitality unit available. Please let us know in advance if you need to utilize this space so that we can follow COVID protocols. You are welcome to bring any pets with you, but you will be responsible to clean up after them.
