New VISTA Member Committed to Strengthening Communities
Since 2009, CHP has received a welcome infusion of young energy and talent each fall in the form of AmeriCorps VISTA members, each of whom have dedicated a year of service to our organization to help combat poverty.
This year, CHP welcomes De'Ashley Spain, a NeigbhorWorks America-sponsored VISTA member assigned to CHP's corporate headquarters in Christiansburg, Va. to help measure, evaluate, and improve CHP's personnel and community development activities.
Founded as Volunteers in Service to America in 1965 and incorporated into the AmeriCorps network of programs in 1993, AmeriCorps VISTA is a national service program designed to fight poverty. Specifically, CHP’s VISTA members focus their efforts on building the organizational, administrative, and financial capacity of the company to better create affordable and sustainable housing opportunities, improve human services, and otherwise assist low-income communities.
A native of Norfolk, Va, De'Ashley is a recent graduate of Virginia Tech, where she majored in Economics. She has spent time tutoring children of all ages in afterschool programs, and has also dabbled in retail, catering, and project and event planning.
Eventually, she would like to work “in an environment surrounded by motivated, pleasant, passionate individuals,” where she can utilize her skills and knowledge, “and never stop learning.”
De'Ashley explained that her motivation for joining the AmeriCorps program was to fulfill a purpose greater than herself. She looks forward to the chance “to learn not only what drives a community, but the essentials that makes a neighborhood feel like a community.”
While relaxing, she enjoys reading, writing short stories, creating delicious meals in the kitchen, and getting crafty with DIY projects.
“Our VISTA members are a valuable component of our team as we work together to develop and strengthen communities,” said CHP Director of Development Kimberly Strahm. “We are forunate to have such a committed individual working this year to help us improve the efficiency and effectiveness of our services."
