CHP Announces Expansion of Weatherization Services in Virginia

Weatherization of a Window

As of August 1, Community Housing Partners (CHP) has expanded the geographic footprint of its Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) services to 12 additional Virginia localities, bringing the total number of communities served by CHP under the program—either as a direct service provider or a subcontractor for other WAP providers—to 42.

CHP has provided some level of weatherization services to Virginia households since 1976.  In that time, the nonprofit organization has improved the energy efficiency, comfort, safety, and affordability of over 25,000 homes through weatherization. Under WAP, which is funded by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and administered by Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD), CHP completed over 35 percent of the total statewide weatherization production in the past four years alone.

Recipients of CHP’s weatherization services are low-income homeowners, particularly those which have an elderly or disabled resident. Households are qualified based on income and recipients must be residents of the state of Virginia.

Rose Sheppard, 59, lives with her disabled 79-year-old mother in Blacksburg, Virginia, and had her home weatherized by CHP in 2013.  “I feel very fortunate to have been a recipient of all this energy efficient work that was done to our home.  I already feel more comfortable in my home and feel no ‘winter worries’ like I usually do.  This has really improved my well being and I know it will have a nice healthy effect on our lives,” she said.

Of CHP’s recent expansion of services, CHP Vice President of Energy Solutions Bill Beachy remarked, “Over the years, we have grown and added additional programs and services, but our roots are in energy efficiency improvements and we remain committed to helping clients lower their energy costs so that they have more income available for necessities such as food and medicine. We look forward to working with the newest communities in our service area to provide the highest quality energy efficiency/conservation services to their residents."

The following municipalities were included in CHP’s weatherization service area as of August 1, 2014:

  • Albemarle County
  • Augusta County
  • City of Charlottesville
  • Fluvanna County
  • Greene County
  • City of Harrisonburg
  • Highland County
  • Louisa County
  • Nelson County
  • Rockingham County
  • City of Staunton
