CHP Promotes AMERICA SAVES Week Feb 19 - 26
As part of the 2012 America Saves Week annual campaign (February 19 - 26), Virginia Saves and a network of state and regional partners that includes Community Housing Partners are spreading the saving message to help build financially fit families in the commonwealth. Virginia Saves is calling attention to the importance of building an emergency savings fund and becoming more knowledgeable about personal finance. Several savings events in the state coincide with the national America Saves event as hundreds of organizations join in to support the campaign.
Employers, banks and credit unions, lenders, nonprofits, and financial educators are collaborating to motivate families to become more financially savvy and develop personal savings plans. In the New River Valley, the NRV Saves partnership involves a "broad range of community partners dedicated to the prospect of helping Virginians learn reducing debt and building their personal savings plans," explains Teresa Walker, savings manager for Virginia Community Capital (VCC) and coordinator for Virginia Saves. In addition to VCC, NRV Saves members include Community Housing Partners, Virginia Cooperative Extension, New River Community Action Agency, Money Management International, BB&T, and Beans and Rice.
Local events scheduled during Virginia Saves Week are:
• Piggy Bank Pageant to help community- or school-based programs promote savings education while having fun. Contestants will create their own banks and compete in three age-based classes. The statewide competition will recognize the top three places in each class.
• Virginia Saves Enrollment Drive: By signing up with Virginia Saves, individuals will receive the American Saver newsletter which offers information on a wide variety of savings topics and real-life saving stories. Those who enroll will also have email access to free financial planning advice. Savers signing up with Virginia Saves during the months of February and March will be eligible for a $100 cash prize.
