Heron's Landing Apartments in Chesapeake, Virginia
CHP Design Studio designed Heron’s Landing for owner Virginia Supportive Housing (VSH). The project features 60 studio apartments surrounding three courtyards in Chesapeake, Virginia.
Heron's Landing is an energy-efficient building, built by Breeden Construction. It incorporates a photovoltaic solar electric system designed to reduce the building's energy load by up to 20 percent and a solar thermal water heating system. Heron's Landing is also EARTHCRAFT Virginia-certified for green building and resource and energy efficiency, and all appliances are ENERGY STAR-rated. Other green features include low-flow water fixtures, a central mechanical system for estimated SEER-30 efficiency, variable refrigerant flow, and Universal Design elements.
Heron's Landing contains almost 40,000 square feet. Each unit is approximately 350 square feet and contains a kitchenette with full refrigerator and range oven, full bathroom, and closet. Furnishings are provided in each apartment, including a bed, dresser, table, and two chairs. In addition to apartments, the building has a community room with kitchen, a fitness room, a computer room, laundry facilities, a front desk, and staff offices. Four units are accessible for formerly homeless single adults with disabilities.
The building is designed with an extensive security system, off-street parking, and access to public transportation. The front desk is staffed sixteen hours per day, and a resident manager is on-call in the evenings.
Heron's Landing offers permanent supportive housing as a regional solution to end homelessness, and was built with funds from the municipalities of Chesapeake, Portsmouth, Norfolk, Virginia Beach, and Suffolk. The apartments include comprehensive supportive services for formerly homeless single adults from the South Hampton Roads area to help residents stabilize and improve their health, incomes, and housing.
Residents sign leases and pay 30 percent of their income in rent, with a minimum monthly payment of $50. VSH has higher than 90 percent success rate in ensuring that residents do not return to a state of homelessness.
The project was completed in Winter 2012.
