Stellar Performances

The ENERGY STAR label is everywhere—on appliances, computers, and TVs—but what about the home itself? Home Performance with ENERGY STAR (HPwES) is the first certification available in southwest Virginia for existing homes that reduce energy use by 20 percent or more. This label verifies that a home is a superior performer in the neighborhood, with lower utility bills, greater comfort, better air quality, and higher values in the real estate market. CHP and its participating contractors are the only ones designated to issue this certification in the Roanoke and New River Valleys.

Through the HPwES program, a certified local contractor can identify problems in a customer’s home by performing a Healthy and Efficient Home Evaluation (HEHE). The contractor then provides the homeowner with customized solutions for achieving a healthier, more comfortable and energy efficient home.

A homeowner may also receive HPwES certification for making home energy improvements that may have already been planned prior to a HPwES consultation. Through the “staged retrofit” approach, homeowners would receive credit for improvements made over time, meaning that a 10 percent improvement in the current year and a 10 percent improvement the following years would earn their home the official HPwES certification. In addition, CHP offers homeowners access to a free third-party quality assurance verification program.

Initiated by the U.S. Department of Energy, the HPwES program has already helped more than 250,000 homeowners across the country achieve at least 20 percent energy savings and provides participating homeowners with an official certificate that is recognized by REALTORs, appraisers, and buyers for its ability to enhance property values.

Homeowners may enroll in the HPwES program at no cost or commitment. More information on the program may be found by emailing energystar@chpc2.org.
