Glitter, glue, and ghosts…oh my! Picking out just the right pumpkin this season just got a little harder for employees in CHP’s Christiansburg and Richmond, Virginia offices, thanks to a patch-full of elaborately decorated pumpkins that were recently created by young residents at CHP’s Maplewood, Meadowview, Linden Green, Greenstone on 5th, Lafayette, Dolly Ann, and Nature Walk Apartments.
Using, glitter, feathers, buttons, beads, and more, dozens of children at CHP rental communities in Virginia and Florida garnished foam craft pumpkins, which were then entered into a pumpkin decorating contest coordinated by on-site resident services staff members. Three pumpkins from two age groups (ages 4-9 and 10-15) were chosen as finalists by property management staffers and then sent to either the Richmond or Christiansburg office for a final vote. Winners at each rental community will receive a $5 or $10 gift card.
At Maplewood Apartments in Martinsville, Virginia, many of the children described how excited they were to decorate their pumpkins and that they had never done a craft project exactly like this before. “I had a lot of fun today,” said one young resident. “My favorite part was getting to use the glitter.”
According to CHP Regional Resident Services Coordinator Tiffany Slusher, the pumpkin decorating activity was a great way to celebrate fall, while providing the children a fun opportunity to express themselves. “With so many schools cutting art and music out of their schedules, it’s now more important than ever for us to give our young residents a creative outlet. Studies continue to show that art helps with hand-eye coordination, concentration, creativity, self-expression, risk taking, and many more important life skills that are needed to become independent and empowered individuals."
