AmeriCorps in Action

CHP Welcomes New State Members

Since 2004, CHP has been extremely fortunate to partner with the AmeriCorps State program in which AmeriCorps members help our resident services coordinators meet critical needs and improve resident life at CHP properties across Virginia.

This year, CHP has an outstanding team of eight AmeriCorps members who are working directly with our residents to increase literacy, teach conflict resolution skills, and provide service learning projects which address community needs and issues.

Specific activities of the AmeriCorps members include organizing programming such as after-school programs, USDA food programs and community gardens, community days, health fairs, and holiday events. The members also have the ability to develop their own programming, allowing them to use their talents and skills to meet the specific needs of the community.

“We really couldn’t do it without our AmeriCorps members,” explained CHP’s AmeriCorps Program Director Jasmin Cotman. “Because of these hard-working men and women, CHP is able to reach more people with our services and expand the programs we offer. We are so grateful to have them working with us.”

AmeriCorps is a network of local, state, and national service programs that enroll over 75,000 citizens per year in various organizations to meet the country’s needs in education, public safety, health, and the environment. For more information on the program, go to www.americorps.gov.
