U.S. Troops Focus of 2013 AmeriCorps Launch

In October, CHP's newest AmeriCorps State members participated in a meeting of all AmeriCorps State programs in Virginia to launch the beginning of their year of service. According to CHP’s AmeriCorps Program Director Jasmin Cotman, members came together to take their official AmeriCorps pledge, participate in training workshops, and work on a service project.

This year, the project benefitted the Red Cross’s “Support Our Troops” effort to collect small snacks and hygiene products to be sent in care packages to American servicemen and women serving in Afghanistan and Iraq. Each AmeriCorps program was asked to donate items such as lip balm, razors, and gum. Cotman happily reported that, “...with the help of donations from local partners and fellow CHP employees, our program was able to give over 1,700 individual items to the project!” Overall, the AmeriCorps members were able to put together over 100 care packages for U.S. soldiers.
