In these challenging economic times, finding a job can be stressful and time consuming. But for residents at Friendship Village in Virginia Beach, Virginia, some of that burden is eased by their community center.
Thanks to a partnership with Opportunity Inc. and the Hampton Roads Workforce Development, the One-Stop Workforce Development Center lets staff at the community center offer residents assistance through job searches, resume help, application access, job mentors, and even tips on how to dress for an interview.
Most who seek jobs and make use of the resources have at least gotten interviews, and a few have even been successful in landing a job.
Two of the residents that faithfully use the center are Robert Brown and Jevon Henoud.
Brown was laid off a few months ago, but always takes advantage of the resources the center provides. “The 3 people working in our community center are great!” said Brown. “[AmeriCorps Member] Solomon [Wiliams] is my buddy and he helps me through every step, starting with the job search.” Henoud agrees, “Not only have I gotten help with finding jobs, but I have learned how to use the computer.”

Angie Roberts-Dobbins rejoins the CHP staff as Resident Services Director, after having previously served as the Program Director for CHP-founded Tekoa, Inc., a sixteen-bed licensed residential facility for seriously emotionally disturbed youth. Angie originally began her work with Tekoa in 1994, where her roles included Youth Counselor and Director of Training & Development.
Most recently, Angie was a Crisis Intervention Training faculty member at the New River Valley Mental Health Association. She also currently serves on the Board of Directors of Flying Changes of Virginia as the Treasurer/Secretary.
As Resident Services Director, Angie's responsibilities include the oversight of resident service programs at approximately 34 apartment communities in the southeast. She also supervises service coordinators for our special-needs populations, creates faith-based and business partnerships to extend our capacity to deliver resident services, and oversees CHP's AmeriCorps program.
Angie received her Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice and Psychology and her Master of Science in Counseling and Human Development from Radford University.
When not at work, Angie enjoys spending time by the lake with her husband and two-year-old daughter.
