A building should be like a tree, it should thrive on the sun's energy, while enhancing its surroundings.

ada vest 's story
A caring nurturer at heart, Ada Vest instantly brings people into her home and loves giving hugs. Ada lives in the first house she and her husband bought together and loves the beauty and quiet of mountain life. After her husband passed away last year, Ada's social services worker enrolled her into CHP’s Emergency Home Repair (EHR) program. The total repairs for Ms. Vest's home cost about $12,000, which replaced her kitchen floor that had caved in, upgraded her electrical work, provided structural repairs and new windows, and removed her three wood stoves, replacing them with safer and healthier heating system.
"I'm just so thankful to have people looking out for me. I don't know what I would have done without you all."
- Ada Vest
redefining affordable housing
through energy efficiency
Since 1976, CHP has offered energy services and related health and safety improvements, as well as emergency heating and cooling services, at no cost to qualifying low-income households through funding from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Weatherization Assistance Program and local social services departments.
environmental sustainability
By practicing and training others in sustainable practices, CHP's Energy Services division incorporates energy efficiency into our communities' homes and daily lives, helping households reduce energy consumption, emissions, and costs. As part of their mission to promote sustainable housing, The Energy Services team offers ENERGY STAR® audits and ratings and acts as an energy consultant on CHP's construction activities.
economic sustainability
Many of our communities' low- and moderate-wealth individuals often struggle to make improvements and repairs to energy inefficient homes, leaving them highly vulnerable to even slight increases in energy costs. Through weatherization and emergency home repairs, Energy Services is able to assist elderly, disabled and low- income families across the region to relieve the burden of annual energy costs by an average of 30%.
social sustainability
CHP’s New River Center for Energy Research and Training (NRCERT) offers training and certification to individuals and organizations throughout the U.S. in heating and cooling service and installation, residential home performance diagnostic testing, and residential energy conservation methods. NRCERT’s courses have been approved by the Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation for vocational education and our staff trains approximately 1,200 participants each year at national, regional and state conferences, while also providing regular training at the NRCERT facility in Christiansburg, Virginia. In addition,CHP offers technical assistance and structural improvements to home and property owners who wish to have safer, healthier, and more comfortable energy-efficient buildings and homes.
