Stephens City Town Home Dedication

Powerful wind gusts and gray skies could not keep potential home buyers or Congressional staff members away from the dedication of six new condominiums designed and built by CHP in Stephens City, Virginia.

The new energy-efficient town homes were dedicated on Tuesday, October 23, 2007, with almost 30 people attending the ceremony. In addition to members of Virginia Congressman Frank Wolf’s staff, the assembled group was made up of those looking to buy a new home, real estate agents, a representative from NeighborWorksr America, and several CHP employees—all of whom were treated to refreshments and a tour.

With the aroma of fresh lumber still lingering in the air, and the gleam of ceramic tile shining in the bathrooms and kitchens, the three-bedroom, one-and-a-half bathroom units impressed many of the visitors.
“These homes are so beautiful!” said a prospective home buyer. “They even have front loading washer and dryers!” she added with a grin.

Though the project faced some obstacles associated with developing in a high-cost area, CHP Special Projects Coordinator Kamilia Lawson said she is excited by the potential of marketing and selling quality, affordable homes to low- and moderate-income families in an area that has a real need for this housing alternative. “Stephens City just does not have enough housing options for people in that price bracket, and we are glad to provide them with a new alternative,” commented Lawson.

In a letter to CHP, Representative Wolf said the project represented “ingenuity, dedication, and community spirit. It gives an opportunity to those who need a community hand to take that important step to realizing part of the American dream...home ownership.”

In fact, two of the units may be purchased sooner than later, as two single mothers with young children wrap up the final details of the loan process.

David Jones, CHP’s Single Family Housing Development Officer, was on hand for the event and stated, “We have a really great product here, and owners should see nice growth in their equity. That translates into an improvement in their financial situation, and their lives in general.”
