laurie ramos' story
Six years ago, Laurie Ramos was seeking American citizenship and a better opportunity for her husband and three children when she left her family in the Philippines to come to the United States. With an American-born son and a baby on the way, the eighteen-year-old found herself struggling to survive on Section 8 vouchers to rent a run-down apartment in a crime-ridden neighborhood in Yorktown, Virginia. In 2001, Community Housing Partners purchased the facility and rehabilitated it into The Woods of Yorktown, a vibrant family-friendly community that is a safe home to more than 200 children. Today, Laurie gives back to her community by cultivating beautiful roses outside of her home.

In collaboration with internal and external stakeholders, CHP builds and preserves housing and influences the development of neighborhoods that are desirable places where people choose to live. A CHP Community of Choice is a well designed, efficient, attractive, affordable, safe place to live where neighbors know and support each other and work together to address local issues of social, economic, and environmental sustainability.

As an organization, CHP is committed to sustainability. In October 2003 we launched our Down to Earth initiative, which focuses on expanding awareness of sustainable practices and developing ways of implementing CHP's Principles of Sustainability in everyday work environments.
Through it's Down to Earth initiative, CHP endeavors to be a leader in the non-profit world as a company actively seeking ways to be environmentally, economically and socially sustainable.
