CHP RECIPIENT OF NATIONAL HOME DEPOT FOUNDATION AWARD

On November 9, 2007, Community Housing Partners (CHP) won first place in a national competition for designing and constructing the Roanoke-Lee Street Project in Blacksburg, VA.  The Home Depot Award for Excellence in Affordable Housing Built Responsibly  was presented to CHP at the Greenbuild International Conference and Expo in Chicago, Illinois by the Home Depot Foundation’s Excecutive Director, Kelly Caffarelli.  According to Caffarelli, the purpose of their Awards of Excellence program is to identify, recognize, and showcase the outstanding work of nonprofit housing developers who have successfully combined affordability with healthy, sustainable measures in the design and construction of housing.  This award is one of several national accolades already bestowed upon CHP’s innovative development—including the 2007 ENERGY STAR® Award for Excellence in Energy-Efficient Affordable Housing, and the James River Green Building Council 2007 Go Green Award.

"We are honored to be the recipient of such a prestigious award from the Home Depot Foundation.  This recognition, and the $75.000 prize we received, will help us to create similar projects in the future for communities throughout the southeast,” said Janaka Casper, CEO and President of CHP.  “It is rewarding to be recognized for a job well done, and to know we have made a positive impact on our social and physical environment,” Casper stated.

Kelly Caffarelli, Executive Director of  The Home Depot Foundation, says her organization has seen firsthand how increased access to affordable housing-as demonstrated in  CHP’s  Roanoke-Lee Street Project-changes people’s lives, gives them hope and alleviates years of frustration.   “The Home Depot Foundation is proud to be a funding partner of CHP because they design and build healthy, affordable homes for low- to moderate-income families.  By forming a partnership with CHP, we are furthering our shared mission of improving the health of local communities,” Caffarelli added.

The Roanoke-Lee Street Project was completed in 2006 and consists of 14 units of green, affordable, sustainable duplex housing.  This unique development incorporates 3 different floor plans, with thehomes ranging in size from 1,038 sq to 1,360 square feet.  Many “green” features were integrated into the design and construction phases of this project, including high efficiency appliances and windows, water saving dual flush toilets, low VOC paints and finishes, fiber cement siding, rain gardens, and the use of native landscaping.   Marrying sustainability with affordability, the Roanoke-Lee Street Project homeswere also restricted for sale to first-time homebuyers earning at or below 80% of the area median income.

Partners in this project who contributed to the housing affordability include: Homebuyers and community members who contributed sweat equity; the Town of Blacksburg; Federation of Appalachian Housing Enterprises; VA Department of Housing and Community Development; VA Housing Development Authority; Housing Assistance Council; Enterprise; Home Depot Foundation and NeighborWorks® America.
